Imagine paying ₹5 lakh or even ₹50 lakh for a mobile number. To many, that sounds absurd. But in India, premium phone numbers with special combinations like 786 or 999 regularly sell for staggering sums. Behind every such sale is a powerful story of culture, belief, status, and superstition that has turned the humble SIM card into a luxury asset.
So what makes these numbers so special? And why are Indians willing to pay a fortune for them?
In Islamic tradition, every letter of the Arabic alphabet carries a numerical value — a system known as Abjad numerals. When the numbers assigned to each letter of "Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim" (In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful) are added together, they total 786.
This phrase is the opening line of the Quran and is recited by Muslims before any important task. As a result, 786 is considered one of the holiest numbers in Islam, a written shorthand for invoking Allah's blessings.
In India, home to over 200 million Muslims, the reverence for 786 is profound. It appears on storefronts, vehicles, currency notes and naturally mobile numbers. Owning a phone number that begins or ends with 786 is seen as carrying divine blessings into every conversation you make.
A mobile number like 9876-786-786 or 786-786-0000 doesn't just look impressive — to its owner, it's a daily connection to their faith. That spiritual value is priceless, which is exactly why sellers can price it so high.
All numbers active in-stock, guaranteed 100% legal UPC code & pan-India network portability, starting ₹2,499.
While 786 draws its power from religious numerology, 999 commands a premium for an entirely different set of reasons.
Indian numerology treats 9 as a powerful number. It is associated with Mars (Mangal) and represents leadership, ambition, and success. The number 9 also has a unique mathematical property it always returns to itself when multiplied (9×2=18, 1+8=9; 9×3=27, 2+7=9), making many people feel it is cosmically significant.
For business owners in particular, having 999 in a contact number signals abundance and continuity exactly the message you want to send customers and partners.
Beyond religion and numerology, there's a deeply human reason for the craze: status signalling.
In India's competitive social landscape, a VIP mobile number is a visible marker of success. Just as luxury cars and designer watches communicate wealth without a word, a phone number with a striking pattern 9999-999-999, 786-000-786, or 98-98-98-000 — instantly communicates that its owner is someone of importance.
Businessmen, politicians, celebrities, and entrepreneurs are among the most eager buyers. A memorable number also doubles as free advertising — clients remember it easily, spreading word of mouth without a single rupee spent on marketing.
